How to Hang Interior Shutters

People have interior shutters for a variety of reasons, some practical; like to keep too bright sunlight from streaming into the house, keep out the winter cold, or block the view of nosy neighbors; others are purely decorative.  There’s something inherently elegant about shutters which can add quality to any room.  So along with your house shutter ideas, here are some suggestions for hanging interior shutters:

Positioning Shutters Correctly Inside the Window Jamb

1.  Find out if your window is square — If you want to do the job correctly you must determine whether or not your window is square.  This is done by starting with the top corner and measuring it to the bottom corner which is opposite it.  Do this on both sides.  If it comes out the same, then you know that the window is square.  If there is over half an inch in difference, that means that your window is not square and you will have to put your shutters outside the window jamb.  This makes for a change in your house shutter ideas.

2.  Find out if your window jamb is deep enough for you to have shutters — To make certain of this you need to measure the how deep the window jamb is starting at the front and going to the nearest obstacle in the back.  This could be a lock, etc.  If there isn’t at least one and a half or two inches of depth, then you can’t install your shutters this way and will have no choice but to install your shutters outside the window jamb or as exterior house shutters.

3.  Measure inside and determine the height and also width of your window opening –  If only the bottom half of the window will be covered, then you should measure to the center point where the shutters will end.  Do your measuring in three spots and when you go to purchase your shutters use the largest measurements.  A good place to buy your shutters is Home Depot.

4.  Buy your shutters and, if needed cut them — You can have shutters custom fitted or you can do the work yourself by cutting them down to the proper size using a saw.  If you don’t know what you’re doing then it’s best not to attempt this on your own, because once the shutters are damaged, the only alternative is to buy new ones.

5.  Mark the drill holes — Simply lift the shutter up to your window and mark where the drill holes are for the hinges.  Place the shutter back down and drill pilot holes.  Reposition your shutter and screw it in securely.  It is a good idea recommended when you buy shutters at Home Depot, to place a thin piece of wood on the windowsill so you don’t end up putting in shutters that touch or scrape the sill.

6.  Check that the shutter is straight — It should also open and close easily.  Then repeat the above steps for all your other shutters.

If tackling this method of hanging shutters does not appeal to you, then you can always just settle for exterior house shutters.
